Name of God - Alpha and Omega: The First and the Last

Alpha and Omega: The First and the Last

Daily Verse: “And he also said, ‘It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life.”

Revelation 21:6 NLT

Let's Talk About It: This name of God is a name Jesus is referred to in this reading for today. Interestingly, the name is in fact in its Greek form – Alpha and Omega. Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet. Here we see that Christ is being referred to as the first and the last. Do you know why that is? Allow me to explain...

We read in the beginning of the Bible, in the Book of Genesis, that when deciding to make man, God said, “let Us make man in Our image (Genesis 1:26.).” Here we get our first glimpse of the Trinitarian being that is God. Christ is the physical representation of God on earth. If we think of God as a man, we cannot help but picture Christ. We are made in His image. We were designed to be like Him, and therefore, were given dominion over earth.

We didn’t do a great job at walking in obedience. In fact, mankind made a mess of the earth, so much so, that God nearly had to start all over, but rather than start from scratch, saved a family, and used them to repopulate the earth and begin anew. This was Noah. We read about him and others throughout the Bible, but Christ is the first perfect man and He is the last perfect man. There is none other like Him for He is God and was the Godman while He walked the earth.

Christ now sits at the right hand of the Father on His throne; however, He was there before the earth was even created. In fact, He helped create Creation. So, He is the First and Last. While I understand this is much more complex than this devotion can explain, we welcome any questions you may have. However, please understand that it is the Holy Spirit that brings the understanding and wisdom of this revelation to every believer. If you struggle to understand what I’m telling you, I encourage you to seek the face of God and ask Him to pour out His Holy Spirit upon you if you are saved and have not yet received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. If you have received the Holy Spirit, then I encourage you to ask God for wisdom concerning this name of His. As James implies in his epistle, God is faithful to provide.

This name of God signifies the fact that He is in control of all things. As we read the Bible, we can’t help but wonder why God would allow sin into the world, but the truth is, when He thought of YOU, He fell so deeply in love with you that He couldn’t imagine a Creation without you. In fact, He loved the thought of you so much, He constructed an elaborate method of ensuring that the two of you could spend eternity together, but not just with one another, but like-minded individuals who loved God and hated evil as well.

It is hard to believe that God would come up with such an elaborate plan, but the Bible is the epitome of a love story. It is the greatest love story ever told – about a God who was so enamored and devoted to His creation, that He was willing to lay down His own life that they may live together in glory for all eternity. As humans, we desire immortality, but the truth is, we are all immortal. We will live forever. However, where we live is determined by how we choose to live our lives here. Will we spend eternity together with the Alpha and Omega or will we burn in the lake of fire? The choice is yours! Which do you choose?

We encourage you to read this article further to get to know the God that loves you beyond measure.
